SRINAGAR, May 27: To highlight the significance of understanding science and engineering in regional languages and the relevance of glossary, the Department of Electronics and Instrumentation Technology (DEIT), University of Kashmir (KU) in collaboration with the Commission for Scientific and Technical Terminology (CSTT), Union Ministry of Education (Department of Higher Education), organized a five-day workshop, which concluded here.
Titled, ‘Fundamental Glossary of Broadcasting (English-Hindi-Kashmiri)’, the workshop ran through May 24 and sought to underline the critical role of glossaries in broadcasting and other scientific disciplines.
An expert advisory committee, comprising both subject and language specialists, meticulously discussed and finalized the first glossary during the 5 days during which 2900 broadcasting terms were translated into the Kashmiri language.
New terms were innovatively coined with the assistance of renowned linguists from the university, adhering to all CSTT parameters and standards. Further, the experts from the relevant fields emphasized the need to have similar workshops in other science and social science subjects.
KU Vice Chancellor, Prof Nilofer Khan, while speaking on the occasion said, “Understanding complex scientific and technical concepts in one’s native language can greatly enhance learning and application.”
At the valedictory function, held in the Conference Hall of the Department of English, KU Registrar, Prof Naseer Iqbal, highlighted the importance of understanding science and engineering in regional languages and the relevance of such initiatives in the context of NEP-2020.
Head, Department of Electronics and IT, Prof M Tariq Banday, also spoke on the occasion.
Dr Javaid Ahmad Sheikh conducted the proceedings and also proposed the formal vote of thanks.
