JAMMU, Apr 12: The festivity of Baisakhi Mela at Kanak Mandi kick start today with a tanga ride amidst the sound of famous folk song “Kanak Mandi Da Tanga Chalya”.
The 5-day festival was inaugurated by Divisional Commissioner, Jammu Shantmanu from Kanak Mandi who alongwith Director Tourism, Soujanya Sharma and Commissioner JMC, Kiran Wattal look a tanga ride.
It is pertinent to mention here that the historical Mela at Kanak Mandi has been revived after 50 years. Tanga ride was major attraction along with the ethnic food stalls set up by the traders association.
A cultural programme was also presented by the Tourism Department showcasing the rich Dogra culture.
In his welcome address, Director Tourism highlighted the programmes to be organized during the Mela. He appreciated the role of various Traders’ Associations in making this Mela a grand success. He also thanked the Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya, Bhopal with whose collaboration the 5-days Festival is being organized showcasing the traditional art and craft of various States by the artisans at Mubarak Mandi from April 13 to 16, 2014.
The Divisional Commissioner said that the Mela will help to revive State’s old history & culture and it becomes eye opener for the younger generation to know about the rich Dogra heritage.
The Commissioner, Jammu Municipal Corporation, Kiran Wattal was the guest of honour.
