NEW DELHI: Eight persons were killed in rain-related incident across the country with heavy rains lashing the northen states even as landslides triggered the closure of Jammu-Srinagar national highway.
Weatherman has warned of heavy to very heavy rains in parts of West Bengal, Sikkim, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Goa and heavy rains in Assam, Meghalaya, Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh and Kerala.
Rains lashed Delhi throughout the day, with the Safdarjung Observatory recording 12.2 mm rainfall, and brought down the mercury while humidity levels shot up. The maximum temperature in the national capital was 30.8 degrees Celsius, four notches below the season’s average while the low settled at 26.8 degrees, normal for this time of the year.
In Jammu and Kashmir, two minor girls were washed away in flash floods triggered by heavy rains, which witnessed the highest rainfall of this year as 157 mm rainfall was recorded till 8.30 AM. A flood alert was sounded in river Tawi and the river at Udhampur is also above danger level.
Landslides triggered by heavy rains forced the closure of 300-km long Jammu-Srinagar national highway, the only surface link between Kashmir and rest of the country.
Heavy rains also lashed many parts of Kashmir Valley as Srinagar gauged 24.3 mm rainfall and Pahalgam 19.6 mm.
A mother and daughter, aged 41 and 13 years, and a 20-year-old youth were washed away by flash floods following heavy rains in Hosur in Tamil Nadu. Chandrambiga lake also breached in this town which recieved the heaviest rainfall of 14 cms in the past 24 hours in the State. (AGENCIES)
