JAMMU, Oct 13: Four Sanskrit books authored by President’s awardee, Prof Priyatama Chandra Shastri, were released in a simple but impressive function, here today.
These Sanskrit books entitle; ‘Jambooshatakam’, ‘Kavitvaswami Shivswami’, ‘Shrilalashatakam’ and ‘Lalitashatakam’.
Jammu University Vice-Chancellor, Prof R D Sharma, was chief guest on the occasion while Prof Ramanuja Devanathan, Principal, Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan, Shri Ranbir Campus, Jammu and Prof Ram Partap Vedalankar, former Head of the Sanskrit Department in JU were the guest of honour. Padamshree Prof Ved Kumari Ghai presided over the function.
Introducing the books, which were released, Sharat Chander Sharma said that Jambooshatakam reminds one of Kalidasa’s Meghadootam as the author describes the various localities of Jammu city by name, In the same vein, the author describes the whole region from Lakhanpur to Poonch and R S Pura to Ramban. Each water body, each place of worship and tourist interest finds mention in the verses of the book.
Similarly, `Kavitvaswami Shivswami’ seeks to bring an ancient Sanskrit poet into the limelight, which lay forgotten in the hoary past of the State. Shivaswami was a contemporary of Avanitvarman, who ruled the Kashmir valley from 850 AD to 864 AD.
`Shrilalashatakam’ is comprising of one hundred Sanskrit Shlokas describing the miraculous life of Yogiraj Baba Lal Dayal Ji Maharaj and his devotion to the great saint.
Each Sanskrit Shaloka is followed by its Hindi translation, which makes easy for a non- Sanskrit knowing reader also to enjoy the book.
`Lalitashatakam’ is a personal tribute to the poet’s late wife. In one hundred emotionally charged Sanskrit Shalokas, the poet extols the virtues of his deceased wife in lavish terms. His boundless love for his wife is simply amazing as his poetic prowess in describing his loss which touches the reader to the quick.
These books, released today, have earned Prof Priyatama Chandra Shastri a special place in the history of Sanskrit literature of the State.
