JAMMU, Mar 14: Minister Incharge Home Department today said that 325 Burmese families comprising 1435 people are residing in various parts of Jammu district.
In reply to the question of MLA from Jammu West Assembly segment, Prof Chaman Lal Gupta, the Minister said that out of 325 Burmese families, 47 have been putting up in Narwal Bala, 37 in Channi Rama, 18 Bhawani Nagar, 44 Bagh-e-Bahu, 6 Vidhata Nagar, 5 Bathindi (Hamza Colony), 1 Dogra Hall, 75 Kiryani Talab, 22 Kargil Colony, 28 Railway Station (Maratha Mohalla) and 42 Sector Domana.
“The ingress of Burmese into the Indian territory has been reported mainly through the Bangladesh border after which they dispersed in rest of the country including J&K”, the Minister said, adding “as and when such reports are received by police in the State these are enquired into and appropriate action as warranted under law is initiated on case to case basis”.
About whether some organizations have been encouraging their entry into the State, the Minister said, “no such information has come to the notice of the Government. However, one NGO of Abdul Rashid Nazki namely Sheikhwat is running three schools at Malik Market and Kiryani Talab for providing education to Burmese children”.
Three Burmese, who were involved in case FIR No.3/2010 under Foreigners Act, 1946 and Section 3 of Passport Entry into India Act, 1990 registered at Police Station Kathua have completed their punishment for commission of offences on January 2, 2013. “Presently, these Burmese are lodged in District Jail Kathua as they have been detained under PSA for six months with effect from January 2, 2013”, the Minister added.
Moreover, six Burmese were involved in case FIR No.14/2012 under Section 14 of Foreigners Act, 1946 and Section 3 of Passport Entry into India Act, 1990 registered at Police Station Dachhan Kishtwar. Out of these six Burmese, two women namely Harnisa and Anwar Begum were released from the jail on January 17, 2013 and January 22, 2013 after being bailed out in the case by the Munsif Magistrate Ist Class Kishtwar. The remaining four Burmese are still in jail.
