SRINAGAR, Aug 2: At least 300 kilograms of polythene was seized from shopkeepers by Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) during an anti-polythene drive in downtown city.
The SMC drive was carried out in areas of Khanyar, Rainawari, Nowhatta, and Gojwara, a statement said, adding that the drive was headed by SMC anti-polythene officer Shakeel Ahmad. “A fine of Rs 5,000 was also imposed on erring shopkeepers. Around 300 kg polythene bags were also sealed from roadside kiryani wallas in these areas,” it said.
The ongoing drive is in tune to the court orders to arrest the growth of polythene in Srinagar, the SMC said, adding that the court has already banned use of polythene in the city.
