3 killed, 100 houses torched in WB

KOLKATA/BEHRAMPUR, July 21:On the eve of fourth phase Panchayat elections, violence virtually ruled across West Bengal with three deaths reported in Murshidabad district and over 100 houses set on fire in southern most district of South 24 Parganas, official sources said today.
A Behrampur report said at least three Congress activists were killed in clashes following disputes in Murshidabad district after being attacked by bombs late last night.
Police said the deceased identified as Nurmohhamad Sheikh and Ahad Ali who were attacked at Kapasdanga block.
Another Congressman re-open Sheikh was also murdered at Bharatpur during a sporadic clashes in the district.
Besides Murshidabad district, three other districts Nadia, Birbhum and Malda are going to fourth of the five-phase panchayat poll in West Bengal.
Murshidabad district Congress leader Ashok Das blamed that the ruling Trinamool Congress was responsible for unleashing a reign of terror before the polling day.
However, the AITC’s district leaders contradicted it saying their partymen were killed in factional feud.
Elsewhere over 100 houses, reportedly belonging to RSP supporters were set on fire before being looted at Basanti in South 24-Parganas district.
There were allegations against the ruling AITC, which also denied the charges. However, RSP leader Subhash Nashkar has alleged that Gosaba MLA Jayanta Nashkar has incited the violence.
South 24-Parganas had third phase poll on July 19.
The incidents of violence have claimed at least 13 lives in West Bengal in the past ten days since the first phase election on July 11.
Seven poll bound policemen, including three village policemen, were killed in a head-on car-truck collision in Jalpaiguri today. (UNI)
