Jammu’s COVID tally climbs to 54

JAMMU, Apr 14: Today wasn’t good day for COVID warriors with three doctors—two from ASCOMS Sidhra including a prominent Gastroenterologist and one Post Graduate (PG) from Medicines Department of the Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu testing positive for Coronavirus. Three others including mother of an earlier COVID positive GMC doctor, who was treated and discharged yesterday and an ASCOMS staffer also tested positive today taking tally of Corona patients in Jammu region to 54 and that of Jammu and Kashmir to 282.

A PG from the Medicines Department of the GMC Jammu, who had attended Coronavirus positive woman from Tikri in Udhampur district, tested positive for COVID-19 today. The woman had died within hours of her hospitalization and was lone Corona casualty in the Jammu region so far. Soon after he was tested positive, the young doctor was shifted to the Isolation Ward.
A prominent Gastroenterologist from Jammu posted in ASCOMS Sidhra and his colleague in the same hospital also tested positive for COVID-19 today. Also a female staff member of the ASCOMS was tested positive after which the hospital has been closed down and nearly 20 contacts of the positive patients identified and sent for quarantine.
Nearly 50 percent staff of ASCOMS Sidhra who had attended Corona positive patient from Lower Roop Nagar before referring him to the Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu has tested negative for COVID-19 while reports of some others are pending. All the staff members were under quarantine at the ASCOMS Hospital itself which has been closed for the patients.
The 34 year old Gastroenterologist of ASCOMS Sidhra was a resident of Shahidi Chowk, while another doctor of the same hospital and 48 year old female staff member, tested positive for COVID-19, also hailed from Jammu. They were asymptomatic and were admitted in the Chest Diseases Hospital, Bakshi Nagar.
They along with the others had attended a patient of Lower Roop Nagar Jammu, who was admitted in ASCOMS Sidhra on April 5 for liver related ailments but had later become symptomatic and was tested positive for COVID-19. He was referred to the Government Medical College Jammu on April 11 and was put on ventilator. He was now responding to the treatment.
Sixty-seven year old mother of a faculty member of the GMC Jammu who was posted in Microbiology Department and was a resident of Channi Himmat, tested positive today. Father, wife and servant of the doctor have already tested positive. The doctor was, however, discharged yesterday after testing negative twice and being declared as treated. Doctor’s mother had earlier tested negative.
Another person from Tikri in Udhampur district, who was contact of a Coronavirus patient, has also tested positive today. Tikri is already a Red Zone.
Of six positive cases today, five were tested in the Microbiology Department of the GMC Jammu and one in the Command Hospital Udhampur. As many as 157 samples were tested in the GMC Jammu today and 17 in the Command Hospital Udhampur.
With three doctors testing positive for COVID-19 in Jammu today, total number of doctors, the frontline workforce against Coronavirus, who have been infected with virus, has gone up to five while number of active cases was four as one of them has recovered. A female dentist in the CHC Garhi in Udhampur district, a resident of Colonel Colony, Talab Tillo, has also tested positive. However, her husband, who is a doctor posted in Kathua and other contacts were tested negative.
SDPO Nagrota Mohan Lal Sharma said all contacts of two doctors and female staff member of the ASCOMS Sidhra who have tested positive for Coronavirus have been traced and sent to quarantine. Their samples have either been taken or were in the process of being taken for testing for COVID-19.
The ASCOMS Sidhra has been closed for patients and only staff members including doctors have been kept there for quarantine.
Majority of SMGS Hospital staff members including doctors and Nurses who had attended a woman from Akhnoor tehsil who turned COVID-19 positive soon after delivering a baby have tested negative for Coronavirus. The woman’s family members including her husband and new born baby besides staff of Sub District Hospital Akhnoor where she was admitted initially before being referred to the SMGS Hospital have already tested negative.
“To trace the source of her infection, the authorities have also taken samples of some more contacts of the woman,” the doctors said.
Also, all family members and contacts of an Army soldier from Samba have tested negative.
Meanwhile, Commissioner/ Secretary Health Ladakh Rigzin Samphel today said all five Coronavirus positive patients were stable.
Ladakh had yesterday recorded two fresh positive cases taking total number of COVID-19 positive patients to 17. However, 12 of them have been successfully treated and sent home while five others were under treatment in the COVID Hospitals of Leh and Kargil.
