3 Army men injured in grenade attack

SRINAGAR, Oct 14:  Three Army personnel were injured in a grenade attack in North Kashmir’s Kupwara town this afternoon.
Militants hurled a grenade towards an Army bunker outside the compound of Army’s 41 Rashtriya Rifles Town Commander near the Kupwara Bus Stand.  Three Army men were injured in the grenade attack and six private vehicles and an army vehicle was damaged in the attack.
Senior police and Army officials immediately reached the spot to assess the situation. The area was immediately cordoned off and searches were conducted in the town. Police and army also established nakas to nab the militants responsible for the attack.
The Superintendent of Police Kupwara, Aijaz Ahmad Bhat, said that three Army men have been injured and they were shifted to a hospital for treatment. He said that the condition of the injured is out of danger.
Army and police cordoned off several areas in the town in search of attackers. Security forces this evening cordoned off Malik Mohalla in the town and conducted house to house searches in search of the militants who lobbed the grenade on Army.
Five private cars bearing registration numbers- JK09A-1749, JK09A-2961, JK09-4947, JK09-4052, and JK01H-7980 were damaged in the attack.
Meanwhile, Tehreekul Mujahideen spokesman, Junaid ul Islam, in a statement issued here said that they carried out the grenade attacked on the Army camp in Kupwara.
Tehreekul Mujahideen is not active for past one decade and security agencies believe that militants have used the TM as front to claim the attack.
Sources said that the security agencies had inputs that the militants may target the North Kashmir’s border town of Kupwara. Kupwara town had been peaceful for several years due to heavy presence of security forces and now the militant want to target it to show their presence.
