JAMMU/srinagar, June 30: There has been no let up in heavy mortar shelling along the Line of Control (LoC) with Pakistan army pounding civilian areas with 82mm shells in Balakote sector of Mendhar tehsil in Poonch district this morning causing fresh wave of panic among the people.
Reports said Pakistan army started shelling the civilian areas at Balakote, Panjani, Sohala, Basooni, Sandot, Balakote Forward and surrounding forward villages, located along LoC, in Mendhar tehsil of Poonch district at 4.15 am today.
The fast asleep people woke up and confined themselves to available bunkers or deep inside the houses to survive shelling.
A woman was injured in the shelling at Basooni, which bore brunt of the shelling. She has been identified as Naseem Akhter, 35, wife of Gias Ahmad R/o Basooni. She was admitted in the hospital and was responding to treatment.
A water tanker was hit by shelling at Basooni and damaged but the tanker operator managed to jump out and survived.
Though the shelling stopped at 11 am, majority of people remained confined in the houses.
Sources said the Indian side retaliated Pakistan shelling and firing very effectively to silence their guns.

Panic has gripped locals due to heavy shelling by the Pakistan army.
Yesterday, two Indian Army jawans were injured when Pakistani troops fired from small arms and shelled mortars on forward posts and civilian areas along the LoC in Sabjian sector of Poonch district.
On June 27, Pakistan had violated the ceasefire by shelling areas along the LoC in Bhimber Gali sector.
There have been 23 ceasefire violations by Pakistan in June besides a cross-LoC attack.
Meanwhile, a woman was injured as Pakistan violated ceasefire in Uri sector of Baramulla district along Line of Control (LoC) today.
Pakistani troops violated ceasefire at Gailta sector of Uri this morning. A woman identified as Shakeela, 45, of Behak Dardkote village of Uri was injured due to splinters.
She was referred to local hospital and later she was shifted to SKIMS Srinagar Soura for specialized treatment. Army also retaliated the Pakistan fire. However, there were no reports of casualties on either side.
Pakistani troops fired on Indian posts a day after Army killed two Pakistani soldiers in sniping. The two soldiers Qamar and Hafiz belonged to 652 Mujahid Battalion of the Pakistan army. They were posted near the Sallan village of PoK.
