SRINAGAR, Feb 19: Security forces this evening cordoned off a village in Central Kashmir’s Budgam district and are believed to have trapped two militants.
The Special Operations Group of Jammu and Kashmir Police and 2-Rashtriya Rifles (RR) cordoned off Makhama village in Magam area of Budgam district.
The area was cordoned off after security forces received information about presence of two militants in the village.
Security forces have tightened the cordon to prevent militants from fleeing the village. The house to house searches will be conducted in the morning.
Meanwhile, security forces today recovered arms and ammunition from an orchard in Lar area of central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district.
A police official said during a search operation at Sheikh Mohalla at Gulabpora area of Lar, the forces recovered one AK 47 magazine, 30 AK 47 rounds, four detonators, two electric IED remotes and a wireless set.
He said this is after a long time that security forces have recovered arms and ammunition in the district, where the militant presence is almost negligible, and has not witnessed any militancy related incident since several years.
Meanwhile, violent stone-throwing clashes erupted between protestors and security forces in Nowhatta area of Old City here after Friday prayers.
Scores of masked youth assembled outside Jama Masjid here and staged protest in favour of executed Parliament attack convict, Mohammad Afzal Guru, and students who held a pro-Afzal event at Jawahar Lal Nehru University (JNU) in Delhi.
The protestors resorted to heavy stone-pelting on security forces deployed in the area ensuing clashes between two sides. Police fired dozens of teargas canisters and pepper grenades towards the stone-throwers, the witnesses added.
The clashes later spread to adjoining Gojwara and Rajouri Kadal localities while all kinds of commercial and transport activities came to a complete halt in these areas. Additional contingents of security forces were rushed to these areas to restore order but clashes continued late in the evening.
