Srinagar, Apr 24: In a swift action, security forces killed two militants and rescued a Railway policeman who was abducted this evening at Yaripora area of Kulgam in South Kashmir.
Inspector General of Police Kashmir range, Vijay Kumar, told Excelsior that both the militants were killed in the brief gunfight soon after they abducted a cop.
He said that the security forces launched an operation after militants abducted a constable Sartaj Ahmad Itoo from Shirpora who was posted with Railway Police. “They took him in a car and Army, CRPF was alerted by police and nakas were established”, he said.
Kumar said that an immediate cordon and searches were also launched by a joint team of police and Army. Soon militants were intercepted at Herpora Yaripora leading to a brief gunfight in which both of them were killed while a policeman was injured. “The abducted cop was rescued,” he added.
He said that the arms and ammunition were recovered from the dead militants.
Sources said that they have been identified as Dr Nadeem Ahmad Rather of Ashmuji in district Kulgam and Shahid Ahmad Bhat son of Mohammad Afzal Bhat of Bugam in district Kulgam.
This is the second successful operation by the security forces in last two days in South Kashmir where security forces rescued abducted cops from militants.
Last night, a police man identified as constable Javid Jabbar son of Abdul Jabbar from Chatwatan Vihil village in Shopian district of South Kashmir was abducted by militants.
Police and Army launched a rescue operation in the area and he was rescued from the militants while the latter fled away.
