2 killed, NH restored

JAMMU, May 4: Two girls were killed in rain-related incidents as heavy downpour lashed various parts of the region today causing a landslide on Jammu-Srinagar National Highway that led to its closure for several hours while fall in temperature has provided some respite to the people from scorching heat.
A thick cover of cloud enveloped the region that witnessed rain in the early hours of this morning, bringing down the temperature by over 3-4 degrees Celsius here.
A minor girl sustained serious injuries after she was struck by lightning in Manwal area of Udhampur district. She succumbed to injuries in Udhampur hospital last night. In another incident, a 18-year- old girl, who had gone to collect fire wood from forest in Chirala area in Doda district, died after a tree fell on her due to high-velocity winds.
Reports said a few houses in Jammu region and power lines in Doda, Kishtwar, Reasi and Rajouri districts suffered damages after trees fell on them due to wind storm last evening. However, all power lines were restored today.
A MeT spokesman said that Banihal in Ramban district and Bhaderwah town witnessed a drop of 11 degrees in temperature, Batote saw a drop of 7 degrees and Kathua district witnessed a drop of 6 degrees Celsius in its temperature whereas, Katra town in Reasi witnessed a fall of 4 degrees in its temperature today.
Meanwhile, landslide at Samroli near Chenani resulted in blockade of Jammu-Srinagar highway for about three hours today. At Panthyal in Ramban sector also, highway was closed due to falling of boulders from 11.45 hrs to 1.45 hrs today. Though it was raining in the region but the highway was clear till late this evening, a Traffic Police official said.
