2 killed, 54 injured as bus carrying ‘barat’ rolls down near Ramnagar

UDHAMPUR, July 7: In a tragic road accident, two persons were killed and 54 others got injured, some of them seriously, when a bus carrying marriage party rolled down in a deep gorge at village Kiya near Ramnagar, here this evening.
The injured were shifted to Sub District Hospital Ramnagar where 15 of them were referred to District Hospital Udhampur in view of their serious condition. Among the critically injured, four of them were further referred to Government Medical College Hospital Jammu for the advanced treatment.
Lt Governor Manoj Sinha has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh each for the next of the kin of the deceased and Rs 50 thousands each to the injured. The UT Government will bear the cost of treatment of all the injured. Click here to watch video
The accident took place around 5.15 pm at village Kiya, about 32 kms from Ramnagar town when the bus JK14D-5050, which was carrying a marriage party from village Gundiya to Majodi, skidded off the road and rolled down around 150 feet deep gorge.
On getting information, a police party from Ramnagar, led by SDPO Dr Bhishm Dubey and SHO, Inspector Paramjeet Singh, rushed to the spot and launched a rescue operation with the help of locals. SSP Udhampur Dr Vinod Kumar also reached the spot and supervised the rescue operation.
All the injured were shifted to the Sub District hospital Ramnagar, but two of them succumbed to their injuries on way to hospital. The deceased were identified as Prem Nath (55), son of Lisu, resident of Gundhian and Shambu Kumar (32), son of Munshi Ram, resident of Bassi Marta.
Directing the district administration to ensure the best possible treatment to the injured, Lt Governor Manoj Sinha expressed grief over the unfortunate incident. “Extremely pained by the loss of lives due to tragic road accident in Ramnagar, Udhampur. My deepest condolences to the bereaved families and prayers for speedy recovery of injured,” he said in a statement.
After coming to know about the mishap, Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh immediately spoke to Deputy Commissioner Udhampur Krittika Jyotasana and directed her to ensure all possible help to the victims. “My condolence with the bereaved families. All possible help being provided to the injured, those requiring to be referred for further treatment will be accordingly shifted,” he tweeted.
Soon after the accident, a team of Transport Department, led by RTO Jammu Ghanshyam Singh, ARTO Udhampur, Jugal Kishore Sharma and the concerned Motor Vehicle Inspectors, visited the spot to ascertain the technical reasons behind the mishap.
Reports said that the bus was overloaded and driver could not control the vehicle, which rolled down in deep gorge. The bus somersaulted several times and got severely damaged with its roof completely smashed.
Those referred to District Hospital Udhamur in view of their serious condition, were identified as Romi (16), son of Tikoo of Marta, Geeta (50), wife of Phami of Marta, Parkash (10), son of Mast ram of ward number 9 in Ramnagar, Rajinder Singh (20), son of Kripal Singh of Padraka, Raju (40), son of Channa of Bassi Marta, Yash Pal (30), son of Hans Raj of Dudu, Sheeru (45), son of Bikru of Marta, Ashok Kumar (45), son of Paras Ram of Marta, Anku Kumar (22), son of Krishnu of Jandrore, Kaku Ram (50), son of Shiv ram of Padarka, Subash (22), son of Kaku Ram of Birnoo, Kiran Bala (19), daughter of Putta Ram of Gundhian, Kuldeep Kumar (38), son of Babli Kumar of Marta, Ashok Kumar (52), son of Bikru of Marta and Ashok Kumar (45), son of Munshi Ram of Marta.
Among these, Romi, Geeta, Raju and Kuldeep Kumar were further referred to GMC Hospital Jammu for the advanced treatment.
