Srinagar, Jan 6: As snowfall continued today, 2 more houseboats sunk in the Dal lake taking the number of houseboats that have sunk in the last 6 months to 9.
With the beginning of the day, houseboat named Bulzimar which is located near Nehru Park sank. As the day progressed, another houseboat named New Shimla located near Ghat no.7 of the Dal also sank in the lake.
While including 2 that sank today, 9 houseboats have sunk in Dal in the last six months as more houseboats have started to collapse for want to repairs.
Earlier, the houseboat owners have been demanding help from the Government in order to carry out necessary repairs of their structure. However, so far, no such help has been offered to them.
The houseboat owners have been maintaining that due to the slump in their business post-August 5, 2019 and then the lockdown imposed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, they are not in a position to carry out such repairs which cost around 1 lakh rupees.
