2 HM militants killed in Handwara shootout

SRINAGAR, Nov 13: Two militants of Hizbul Mujahideen were killed in a brief shootout at Handwara area of Kupwara district this evening while security forces launched massive searches in North Kashmir against militants.
Militants this evening fired upon a joint party of police and Army near Galganzer, Zachaldara in Rajwar area of Handwara in the frontier district of Kupwara. The attack was, however, repulsed and both the militants were killed in exchange of fire.
The militants have been identified as Toyib of Sopore and Ashiq of Palhallan in Baramulla district. They were affiliated with Hizbul Mujahideen outfit. Police is conducting investigation and legal formalities of the duo.
Sources said that the security forces had information about the movement of these two militants and when they stopped a car at naka, militants opened fire on the troops leading to a brief gun battle in which both the militants were killed.
Meanwhile, the telecom companies have been directed by authorities to snap internet facilities in Sopore, Palhallan and Handwara areas of North Kashmir in the wake of militant killings. The telecom services are also down in North Kashmir to prevent any violence.
A police spokesman said that militants fired upon a joint party of Police Handwara, 21 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) and 92 Battalion of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) who were performing Naka duties near Sultanpora Crossing, Zachaldara in Handwara.
Meanwhile, security forces today conducted a cordon and search operation in Hajin area of Bandipora district in North Kashmir. The Army’s Rashtriya Rifles (RR), police’s Special Operation Group (SOG) and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel carried out an early morning search operation at Mir Mohalla in Hajin after receiving an input about presence of militants.
The security forces conducted house-to-house searches and also cordoned off adjacent areas but no militant was found in the area. Later, the searches were called off. A cordon and search operation was also launched by security forces in Rangwar village of Lalpora in Kupwara district but it ended peacefully.
