JAMMU, Dec 26: Two persons died due to heart attack when a moderate intensity earthquake jolted parts of Jammu and Kashmir, forcing people to rush out of their homes in panic last mid night.
Reports from Srinagar said that one person died due to heart attack when a moderate intensity earthquake jolted Kashmir valley, including summer capital, Srinagar, forcing people to rush outside in panic despite minus 3.2 degree minimum temperature.
The 6.5 magnitude tremors on Richter Scale were felt around 12.45 AM for about 60 seconds. People rushed out of their homes in panic and took shelter on roads, open fields and compounds.
The epi-centre of the quake was 191 km deep in Afghanistan-Tajkistan border. Officail sources said one Syed Youns Shah, a resident of Dangerpora, Baramulla suffered a massive heart attack at Lar Ganderbal in Central Kashmir where he was working in a bakery shop.
He was taken to hospital where he was declared brought dead. A number of structures have also suffered minor cracks in the Valley.
Reports from Poonch said that one Zarid Mohd (38), son of Sher Mohammed resident of Galuta (Harni) rushed out of his house along with other family members during earth quake. Due to shock he complained of chest pain and fell unconscious. He was taken to Mendhar hospital in a private vehicle where doctors declared him as dead. He was an ex-serviceman and now re-employed.
Reports from Rajouri, Reasi, Udhampur, Doda, Jammu and others parts of the region said that the people came out in panic during mid night despite chilling cold when the earthquake jolted the entire region. Many houses and other buildings in Rajouri and parts of Poonch reported to have developed minor cracks but no other major damage has been reported.
