Srinagar, Sept 10: Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU), Amritsar, Vice-Chancellor, Prof. A. S. Brar today emphasized that the performance of the faculty members working in higher educational institutions, particularly the Universities, across the country, should be evaluated thoroughly every year.
“Those who have performed excellent should be rewarded suitably while the poor performers should be served the memo, asking them to improve or suffer,” Prof. A. S. Brar said while delivering the presidential address during the inaugural day of the two day seminar on “Quality Concerns in Higher Education,” organised by the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) and School of Education, of the Central University of Kashmir (CUK), in collaboration with National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) Bangalore at Nowgam academic block.
Central University of Jammu, Head and Dean Department of Educational Studies, Prof. Lokesh Verma, Dean and Head School of Education, CUK, Prof. N A Nadeem, Registrar, Prof. M Afzal Zargar, Controller of Examinations/ I/c Finance Officer, Dr. Nazir Ahmad Gilkar, Deans of other Schools, Heads/Coordinators of other departments, faculty members of the University and other educational institutions were also present on the occasion and expressed their views.
Prof. Brar said that creativity was missing in the present teaching practices and the faculty members were more concerned about completing the syllabi. “The faculty should use innovative methods for teaching and learning and should be creative in their approach,” he said, adding that the performance of the faculty members should also be assessed by the quality of their research papers published in any journal. “The faculty should also be evaluated on regular feedback from the students.”
“In the Universities of West, the assessment of papers published in different journals by the faculty members plays a pivotal role in the overall ranking of the varsity,” he added.
GNDU Vice-Chancellor said the educational institutions should not come under the purview of any regulatory body. “The academic councils of universities and other higher educational institutions should be given leverage to take decision regarding the academic matters,” he said, adding, that the premier institutions of higher learning in the country like IIMs were without the regulatory body.
Prof. Brar said the students admitted in educational institutions were more obsessed with percentage rather than gaining knowledge. “These students are interested in getting a government job and earning only money,” he said.
He said the Universities should adopt the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) immediately and the faculty members should play a key role in facilitating its implementation.
Prof. Brar asked the University administrators to adopt a definite rationale while taking decisions vis-à-vis academics and other administrative affairs.
