2 civilians injured in encounter in south Kashmir

SRINAGAR: Two civilians were reportedly injured in an encounter between militants and security forces at Awantipora in south Kashmir district of Pulwama this evening.
Official sources here said following intelligence information about presence of militants at village Dogripora in Pulwama, a joint search operation was launched by 55 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) and Special Operations Group (SOG) of the Jammu and Kashmir Police in the area.
However, when security forces were moving towards a particular area, militants hiding inside a residential house fired at them indiscriminately with automatic weapons. It was not immediately clear how many militants were trapped inside.
The security forces retaliated, ensuing in an encounter, they said, adding in the exchange of fire two civilians reportedly received bullet injuries. The injured were immediately taken to a hospital. Additional security forces were rushed from nearby camps to further cordon off the area to foil any attempts by militants to escape, they added.
However, due to darkness operation was stopped, they said, adding cordoned around the village continued. There was no firing for the past some time, they said, adding further details are awaited. (AGENCIES)
