Jammu, May 20: Two Border Security Force (BSF) personnel were martyred when militants attacked them near Pandach area on the outskirts of Srinagar city this evening.
A BSF spokesman said here that the troops of 37th battalion were on road opening duty in Pandach area of Gandberal when motor cycle borne militants fired at them indiscriminately. He said that two BSF men Rana Mandol and Jaiul Haque were critically injured and later succumbed to their injuries. He further said that militants snatched rifles from both the BSF men.
The spokesman said that the area has been cordoned off and searches are being conducted against the militants responsible for the attack. Click here to watch video
Sources said that 2-3 motor cycle borne militants attacked the two BSF men who were purchasing some items from a shop in Pandach area. They said that these men were on road opening duty at 90-feet road but had left the party and had gone to Old Soura Road to purchase few items from a shop.
They said that the BSF men had violated the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) and went some 500 metres away from their duty location when they were targeted by militants. They said they were busy at shop when militants attacked them from behind.
They said one AK-47 rifle and one INSAS rifle were snatched from them. They added that the men from the BSF would have been regular visitor to the shop and militants must have been keeping watch on their movement.
Sources said that an inquiry has been ordered against the Commanding Officer of the BSF for violation of the SOP by his troops.
In the meantime, security forces today arrested four Over Ground Workers (OGWs) of militants of Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) from Budgam district and recovered arms and ammunition from their possession.
Police said that on a credible input, Budgam police along with 2RR of Army arrested four OGWs of LeT identified as Muzaffar Ahmad Dar, Mudasir Ahmad Lone, Younis Waza, all residents of Budran and Nazir Ahmad Sheikh resident of Poshkar Khag.
They said that incriminating materials, arms and ammunition including one pistol, grenade and huge cache of ammunition were recovered from their possession.
As per the police records, they were involved in providing logistic support and shelter to militants of LeT operating in the area besides other unlawful activities.
A case (FIR No. 82/2020 under relevant Sections of law) has been registered in Police Station Magam and further investigation in the matter is in progress.
