SRINAGAR : Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, received 2.5 cm fresh snowfall, heaviest in the winter so far, ending more than four-month-long dry spell when only 4 mm rainfall was recorded against normal of 50 mm. A Met department spokesman has warned heavy snowfall during the next 24 hours on higher reaches in the state, where heavy to very heavy snowfall was experienced since yesterday. However, he said there could be improvement in the weather from tomorrow onwards in the state.
Roof and tree tops, roads and open fields had turned white as people woke up this morning in the city, which recorded dry weather for about four months though there was light rain and snow in between.
Snowfall continued for some time this morning before the weather turned again dry but cloudy and chilly. However, the minimum temperature dropped and settled at minus 1 degree which is being considered normal during this time of the winter. However, it was one notch colder than yesterday, Met spokesman said adding 2.5 cm snowfall was recorded till 0800 hrs this morning.
He said light rain or snow would occur during the next 24 hours in the city.
The world famous ski resort of Gulmarg which had witnessed very less snowfall during 40-day-long Chilai-e-Kalan, coldest period of the winter, which ended on January 29, recorded one and half a feet fresh snowfall, much to the delight of traders and those connected with the tourist trade. They expect good number of tourists, skiers and other adventure lovers now.
The Affarwat, the highest skiing point connected by Gandola Cable Car, received more than two feet of fresh snowfall on slopes which were already under several feet of snow. Heavy snowfall was also received at Kongdori, Khilanmarg and other heights in the Gulmarg sector, where people have been asked to take extra precautions because of threat of snow avalanches.
