JAMMU, Nov 3: As many as 1731 degrees were awarded at Thapar University, Patiala during its 31st Convocation today.
These include 73 PhD degrees, 693 Masters in Engineering, Sciences, Humanities and Management and 961 Bachelor’s degrees in Engineering.
Professor Joseph Klafter, President, Tel Aviv University, who was chief guest on the occasion said, “You’ve been given a box of cutting-edge thinking tools at Thapar University. A solid basis of skills and knowledge. This is an excellent starting point for innovation.”
Dr G Viswanathan, founder and Chancellor of the VIT University, Vellore, was the guest of honour. Gautam Thapar, President Thapar University, presided over the function and awarded medals.
The 61-yr old Thapar University is global ranked by the prestigious The Times Higher Education (THE) World University Ranking 2018. Thapar University has forged deep partnerships with other globally ranked universities including with Trinity College Dublin and Tel Aviv University Israel.
Gautam Thapar said, the partnerships with Trinity College Dublin and Tel Aviv University are part of the university’s vision to be transformative both nationally and globally and continue at the forefront of technology, scientific development and education.
The award winners included Divanshu Kapila who received the President’s Medal for securing the highest CGPAv while Celeste Goel won the S Ranbir Singh Memorial Medal for Best All-Round performance. Shreya was awarded the Prof V Rajaraman Computer Science Engineering Award and Naman Garg was awarded the S Ram S Sidhu Memorial Medal.
Professor Prakash Gopalan, Director Thapar University said, ‘we are very proud that our University is ranked 26th by National Institute Raking Framework (NIRF-2017); 210th in QS World University Ranking as well”. He added that the “Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) USA has accredited BE Programs in Mechanical Engineering, Electronics & Communication Engineering, and Civil Engineering.”
Thapar University has a rich history of illustrious and eminent alumnus. In recognition of its alumnus success, a special award category ‘Distinguished Alumnus award’ is presented. The awardees this year were; Ashwani Kumar Kapoor, former member of the Railway Board, Ministry of Railways, ex-officio Secretary to Government of India, Commodore Rakesh Anand, Chairman and Managing Director, Mazagon Docks Shipbuilders Limited, Mumbai and Rajesh Uppal, Executive Director of Information Technology, Education and Training, Maruti Suzuki India Ltd.
