NEW DELHI : Voting for 70 seats of the Delhi legislative assembly began on a dull note with an estimated 17 per cent people casting their ballots till 1130 hrs.
Sources in the Delhi election office said an estimated 17 per cent of the voters exercised their franchise till 1130 hrs.
Election officials said though the voter turnout since early morning had been low, it was likely to pick up later in the day.
Officials said there has been 22 per cent voting till 1130 hrs in the New Delhi seat where AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal is locked in a triangular contest with Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and former Delhi BJP chief Vijender Gupta.
Among those who cast their votes were Mr Kejriwal, Congress president Sonia Gandhi, her daughter Priyanka Vadra along with her husband Robert Vadra, party vice-president Rahul Gandhi, Union Minister Kapil Sibal and BJP chief ministerial candidate Harsh Vardhan.
Talking to reporters after casting her vote, Ms Dikshit said the Congress was going to election on the plank of the development carried out by her government in Delhi in the last 15 years.
She reiterated that BJP PM candidate Narendra Modi has no role to play in the Delhi elections.
“This is no referendum for Centre, it is a vote for Delhi. Modi is BJP’s PM candidate and the sheen is off, so he is nothing here. This election is about Congress and not me and Modi is no factor,” Ms Dikshit said.
