JAMMU, Mar 1: The third phase of COVID-19 vaccination drive for people above 60 years and those aged 45 and above with co-morbidities began today across Jammu and Kashmir, with 13,500 people receiving their first dose of vaccination in designated Government Hospitals across the Union Territory. However, the drive could not be started today in 34 authorized private hospitals due to lack of freezing facilities and other issues.
Official sources told Excelsior that 13,500 people including above 60 years and those aged 45 and above with co-morbodities registered today either online or physically in designated Government facilities and all of them received their first dose. They said the figure might go up higher but due to some technical problem in the Co-WIN2.0 portal, several people failed to register themselves for vaccination.
“As soon as the registration for the vaccination began on Co-WIN2.0 portal at 9 am, people started complaining of problems in registration as simultaneously a large number of people visited the portal. Very few were lucky to register themselves while most of the people could not register,” sources added.
Sources informed that as J&K Government has kept vaccination registration open for healthcare and frontline workers, a total of 9000 of these workers received their 1st shot in the UT today and in the coming days, the figure may go up as after seeing Prime Minister Narendra Modi receiving vaccination, the confidence of the people in vaccine has risen.
In Jammu district, sources said a total of 451 people above 60 years and those aged 45 and above with co-morbidities received their first shot today. They said maximum 150 people were vaccinated in Government Hospital Gandhi Nagar, 108 in Government Hospital Sarwal, 46 in GMC Jammu, 51 in Urban Health Centre (UHC) Trikuta Nagar, 25 in SMGS Hospital, 14 in Red Cross Society office at Kachi Chawani, 13 in Psychiatric Hospital, 12 in GB Pant Hospital, 11 in SDH Kot Bhalwal, 9 in SDH Akhnoor, 5 in UHC Talab Tillo and one in Government Hospital Khour.
Meanwhile, several people today visited 34 private hospitals/nursing homes authorized by the Centre in J&K in the hope of getting 1st COVID jab but returned disappointed as they were told by the officials of these hospitals to come next week since they have not yet got supply of vaccines from the Government.
When contacted, Director Health Services Jammu Dr Renu Sharma said that most of the authorized private hospitals/ nursing homes in Jammu did not have cold chain facilities to store the vaccines, except ASCOMS Hospital. They (administration of hospitals) have sought some days’ to fulfill all requisite formalities to get supply and start vaccination, she stated and informed that by next week, all these private hospitals will start COVID vaccination.
Regarding problem in registration through Co-WIN2.0 portal, Dr Sharma said that there is some scope of improvement in the portal and the engineers are already on the job. She informed that people can register themselves using Arogya Setu App also or physically by visiting the designated Government facilities along with any identity proof, area pin code and mobile number.
Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Jammu, Dr JP Singh said that he chaired a meeting of representatives of authorized private hospitals of Jammu district to start the 3rd phase of COVID vaccination wherein most of them agreed to purchase Ice Lined Refrigerator, which is mandatory for saving the COVID vaccines. He said by the end of this week or start of next week, the COVID vaccination will be started in the private hospitals authorized by the Government.
The CMO said many other hospitals have also shown their interest to start COVID vaccination and they have been told to complete all required formalities including empanelment with Ayushman Bharat/CGHS, arrange requisite manpower, space (at least 3 rooms), cold chain facility, etc.
Dr Singh said that many people aged 50 or above today visited designated Government facilities to register themselves for COVID vaccination but they were not carrying certificates of their co-morbidities. He advised such people to carry co-morbidity certificate with them as it is mandatory to register themselves for vaccination. He further advised all people above 60 years of age, particularly women to come with one attendant to get the COVID jab.
He further informed that 100 persons will be vaccinated per day in each Government designated facility and if the number of registration in any facility exceeds this number, the remaining registered people will receive their COVID jab next day.
Meanwhile, 3rd phase of vaccination also began today in Kargil district of Ladakh UT. During the first vaccination session held at District Hospital Kargil (DHK), 50 beneficiaries including 44 senior citizens above 60 years of age and 6 persons above 45 years with co-morbidities were given the COVID-19 vaccine jabs.
As per the details made available by the District Immunization Officer (DIO) Kargil Dr Muhammad Abbass, 56 Health Care Workers in the district were given the 2nd dose of COVID-19 vaccine at Primary Health Center (PHC) Panikhar while 10 Health Care Workers were inoculated 1st dose of the vaccine at District Hospital Kargil.
