SRINAGAR, Dec 28: Thirteen persons, including four women, were injured in teargas shelling by police in Wagoora area of North Kashmir’s Baramulla district today when residents were protesting against a Government order.
“13 persons including four women received injuries in teargas shelling,” a police official posted in Baramulla said.
One of the injured, Parvaiz Ahmad Lone was hit by splinter of teargas shell on his nose.
The dispute has been brewing up between the residents of Wagoora and Kreeri since 2007 when the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) led coalition regime granted Tehsil status to Kreeri, which doesn’t have any civil administrative office.
Following public opposition from Wagoora, which fulfilled all requirements for Tehsil including Naib-Tehsil office, Block Development Office and other top administrative units, to the order it was kept in abeyance.
The row erupted today after the Government posted a Tehsildar at Kreeri village, which was protested by Wagoora residents.
The irate residents said police fired teargas shells on them when they were holding a peaceful demonstration against the Government order.
Muhammad Yaqoub Wani, a local agitator, said Government should revoke the order and make facts of Cabinet Sub-Committee public which has granted Tehsil status to Wagoora.
Reports said hundreds of people in Wagoora came on roads and raised slogans in favour of granting tehsil status to Wagoora.
The protestors blocked the traffic and clashed with police after police personnel tried to disperse them. Police fired atleast 200 tear smoke shells to disperse them which resulted into injuries to several people.
The Deputy Commissioner Baramulla, Khawaj Ghulam Ahmad said he is looking into the issue.
