1 killed, 130 injured in fresh clashes with security forces in Kashmir

SRINAGAR: A person was killed and over 130 were injured in fresh clashes across Kashmir valley, where people took to streets after Friday prayers, to protest against the civilian killings.

With this, the total number of civilians killed in security force firing has increased to 54 since July 9, a day after Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) commander Burhan Wani and two other militants were killed in an encounter with security forces in Anantnag district. The policemen have also lost their lives in clashes, during the last 28 days.

Officials here this evening said that hundreds of people, defying curfew restrictions, took to streets at Chadoora in central Kashmir district of Bugam after Friday prayers, to protest against the killing of civilians.

However, security forces burst teargas shells and resorted to lathi charge to disperse the protestors, who were pelting stones. The security forces later fired to disperse the agitators, who were regrouping and pelting stones. Over 30 persons were injured in the clashes. The injured were immediately taken to a hospital, where one of them identified as Mohammad Maqbool Khanday succumbed to his injuries.

Meanwhile, shouting ‘anti-forces’ and ‘pro-freedom’ slogans, thousands of protestors, including women and children, defied restrictions and took to streets at various places in south Kashmir district of Shopian after Friday prayers. (AGENCIES)
