1 dead, 35 injured, school collapses, phone service snapped as quake hits Jammu region

JAMMU:One person was killed, 35 including school kids were injured as a primary school collapsed and telephone services snapped in separate mountainous belts as a 5.8 magnitude earthquake rocked Jammu region this  afternoon.

“One person identified as Gushan, 60, son of Shiv Lal, was killed in a remote belt of hilly Kishtwar district while he was grazing cattle when a moderate intensity earthquake of 5.8 magnitude on Richter scale rocked the Jammu region,” a police spokesman here told reporters.

He said panic gripped the region when the tremors were felt at 1227 hrs and lasted for about ten seconds.

The quake was epicentred at 17 km North-East of Bhaderwah on J&K-HP Border in Jammu region, he said.

“At least five school children and three teachers got injured during the earth quake in Kishtwar district while about 20 more children suffered minor injuries when a primary school building collapsed in Bhaderwah town of Doda district,” he added.

He said one of the injured identified as four-year-old girl Muskan, daughter of Ganesh Lal, resident of Chattisgarh, at present Kishtwar was airlifted to the Government Medical College and Hospital.

“Other buildings including the sub-district hospital in Bhaderwah and houses suffered cracks due to tremors,” the spokesman here said.

Meanwhile the telephone services remained disrupted in the mountainous belts due to which senior administrative and police officials were not be able to contact.

People were seen enquiring about the well being of their relatives from the Police Control Room lines.

People rushed out of their homes and offices in panic and took shelter in open spaces as tremors were also felt in this winter capital but no incident of any damage has been reported.

This was the second tremor in Bhaderwah during the past 24 hours. (AGENCIES)
