WASHIGNTON, April 9: The international community will not accept paying Iran for the passage of vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis told the CNN broadcaster.
“I don’t think that the international community would be ready to accept Iran setting up a toll booth for every ship that crosses the straits. It seems to me to be completely unacceptable,” Mitsotakis said.
The prime minister stressed that the US-Iranian agreement on the payment for crossing the Strait of Hormuz would be a dangerous precedent for the freedom of navigation.
Mitsotakis added that a ceasefire in Lebanon should become a part of the peace deal between Iran, the United States, and Israel.
On Tuesday night, Trump said that he had agreed to a two-week bilateral ceasefire with Iran, assuring Iran had also agreed to open the Strait of Hormuz. The Iranian Supreme National Security Council said thereafter, Tehran would begin talks with the US on Friday in the Pakistani capital of Islamabad.
