JAMMU, May 31: ‘World No Tobacco Day’ was observed today by various organizations including educational institutions throughout the State.
To mark the occasion, Omshanti Meditation Centre, Brahmakumaris, Jammu organized a rally, which was flagged off by Dr Akshay Sharma, Corporator Rehari. The rally passed through Rehari, Bakshi Nagar and Jewel Chowk in the morning and in the evening it moved towards Bikram Chowk, Police Lines, Gandhi Nagar, Shastri Nagar before culminating at Sainik Colony.

Under the theme “Tobacco and lung health” the World No Tobacco Day was observed in Leh today. A grand function was organized by Health Department at Leh main bazaar where the Deputy Chairman, LAHDC, Leh Gyal P Wangyal was the chief guest while the Executive Councilor Health, Tsering Samdup and eminent Physician Padmashri Dr Tsering Norboo were the guests of honor. The speakers highlighted the negative impact of consuming tobacco and second hand smoke exposure on people’s health. Skits and Songs on the theme of anti tobacco were presented by the Ladakh Film Society and Cultural Group. Earlier, an awareness rally was also taken out through main market by the school children.
Government College of Physical Education, Gadoora (Ganderbal) observed the day under the banner of NSS. College staff and students spoke out the negative impact that tobacco has on people’s lungs, need of reducing tobacco consumption and make the College campus smoking free.
Army conducted a series of lectures on the occasion of “World No Tobacco Day” at Government High School, Sangiot, Moolie Mohra, Government Primary School, Goldh, Government Girls Middle School, Langer and Youth Centre, Palma in Poonch and Rajouri districts. During the event, the locals, especially the youth were sensitized about the adverse effects of consumption of tobacco, various signs, symptoms and treatment aspects. The lectures were delivered by Army doctors and prominent personalities of the region.
Mount Litera Zee School, Anand Nagar, Bohri, Jammu observed “World No Tobacco Day” by organizing a special Assembly in which the teachers gave demonstrations regarding this event. The students and staff also delivered speeches on the theme “Say No to Tobacco”. The students performed a skit to demonstrate the health hazards of intake of tobacco like lung cancer and any other bronchitis.
In connection with “World No Tobacco Day”, a dental check-up and awareness camp was organized by Indian Dental Association (IDA) Jammu at Guru Gobind Singh Higher Secondary School, Kunjwani. More than 600 students of the school were examined by Dr Bhupinder Singh, member of J&K State Dental Council, Dr Sania, Dr Pranav Gupta and Dr Ambreen Chaudhary. The students were given the demonstration of the proper brushing method and maintenance of oral hygiene. Dr Gautam Sharma, IDA president made the children aware about the importance and upkeep of oral hygiene.
