JAMMU, Feb 2: Marking the beginning of World Cancer Month, a public health drive was launched on February 1 and 2, targeting the prevention of cervical cancer.
Over a hundred girls aged 9 to 15 from underserved communities, particularly the urban slums of Channi Himmat, received free HPV vaccinations. State Cancer Institute in collaboration with NGO SUPPORT provided more than 1300 HPV Vaccines.
The vaccination drive was organized by NGO SUPPORT, founded by renowned social reformer Dr. Navneet Kaur, in collaboration with the State Cancer Institute and Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu.
The effort was further strengthened by the support of RC Jammu Baahu. A dedicated medical team from State Cancer Institute led by Dr. Bhawana and including Dr. Nadhia Choudhary, Dr. Simranjit Kaur and Jr. Staff Nurse Nisha, executed the vaccination drive spearheaded by Dr. Navneet Kaur and assisted by Dr. Gurpreet Kaur.
“This is a decisive step towards safeguarding our future generations from cervical cancer. By focusing on these young girls in marginalized communities, we are addressing inequality in healthcare access head-on,” said Dr. Navneet Kaur, chairperson of NGO SUPPORT.
Awareness camps running parallel to the drive were supported by Ritu Singh of Maharaja Hari Singh Foundation, Being Indian Patriots, RC Jammu Baahu, and RC Jammu Tawi.
A handout stated that this event is just the start of a month-long series. NGO SUPPORT, in collaboration with the State Cancer Institute, GMC Jammu, ISBTI J&K and RC Jammu Baahu, will host a range of activities like poster competitions on cancer awareness, can-walks and can-talks for public engagement, further HPV vaccination drives, comprehensive cancer awareness camps across Jammu Province and conference on Cancer.
The initiative received support from Principal GMC Jammu, Dr. Ashutosh Gupta; Medical Superintendent of State Cancer Institute, Dr. Deepak Kumar and HOD of the State Cancer Institute, Dr. Rajeev Gupta and Mridul Arora, general secretary BCBPF.
