World Cancer Day observed across Jammu with focus on awareness, early detection

JAMMU, Feb 4: Various institutions across Jammu and adjoining regions observed World Cancer Day today with a strong focus on awareness, early detection, research, and patient-centric care through diverse initiatives.
AIIMS Jammu marked the occasion with a series of patient-centric and emotionally resonant initiatives under the leadership of Prof (Dr) D N Sharma, Executive Director & CEO, and Prof (Dr) Shabab Lalit Angurana, Dean Research and Head, Radiation Oncology. A key highlight was the “Human Experience” session, where cancer patients and caregivers shared deeply personal journeys, reinforcing that healing extends beyond clinical protocols. Ahead of the programme, a poster competition encouraged creative advocacy, while awareness sessions for healthcare professionals focused on early diagnosis, multidisciplinary care, and psychosocial support. The observance concluded with a ceremonial cake-cutting and balloon release.
CSIR-Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine (IIIM), Jammu engaged more than 350 school students through awareness lectures and presentations highlighting cutting-edge oncology research. Director Dr Zabeer Ahmed underlined the institute’s role in preclinical drug discovery, particularly in areas such as triple negative breast cancer, colorectal and pancreatic cancers, and cancer pain management. Participants were given guided tours of advanced laboratories and interacted directly with scientists to gain first-hand exposure to ongoing research. Several senior scientists and divisional heads were present, reinforcing the Institute’s commitment to nurturing scientific curiosity and cancer awareness among young minds.
SMVD Narayana Multispeciality Hospital, Jammu witnessed strong public participation during a cancer awareness walkathon aimed at promoting early screening and prevention. Flagged off from the Gandhi Nagar clinic by MLA Vikram Randhawa and Deputy Commissioner Jammu Dr Rakesh Minhas, the march concluded at Green Belt Park. Cancer survivors, healthcare professionals, and citizens joined hands to spread the message that timely detection can save lives. Facility Director Dr MM Mathavan highlighted the hospital’s comprehensive oncology services, while Dr Yashpal Sharma termed the institution a major healthcare asset for J&K. The hospital announced free cancer OPDs, video consultations till February 28, 2026, a “Project Zero-Fear” screening package, and BMT services from April 19, 2026.
Aryans Institute of Nursing, Aryans Group of Colleges, Rajpura, conducted an awareness programme under the theme “United by Unique,” focusing on prevention, early detection, and timely treatment. The keynote address by Dr Jatinder Pal Kaur, Senior Consultant Obstetrics and Gynaecology and former Senior Registrar, AIIMS New Delhi, detailed cancer risk factors, warning signs, and the importance of regular screening. Chairman Dr Anshu Kataria emphasized that awareness remains the strongest weapon against cancer and urged educational institutions to take proactive responsibility. The programme saw enthusiastic participation from students and faculty and concluded with an interactive question-answer session.
On the eve of the observance, GGM Science College, Jammu, in collaboration with Indira Gandhi Government Dental College (IGGDC), Jammu, organized an oral health education and screening camp focusing on early detection of oral cancer. The initiative was jointly undertaken by the Red Ribbon Club, NCORD Committee, NSS Units, and academic departments. A specialized IGGDC team led by Dr Iqbal Singh, HoD and Professor, Department of Public Health Dentistry, conducted screenings of 216 students and staff members. An awareness lecture highlighted early symptoms of oral cancer, the harmful effects of tobacco and substance abuse, and the importance of timely medical consultation, reinforcing prevention through education and regular screening.
