Workshop on ‘Cyanobacteria: Culture Techniques & Applications’ concludes at JU

JAMMU, Aug 23: The Department of Botany, University of Jammu, under the aegis of the Botanical Club, organized a two-day hands-on training-cum-workshop on “Cyanobacteria: Culture Techniques & Applications”.
The workshop aimed to enhance research skills and introduce participants to advanced techniques in cyanobacterial studies. The workshop featured five technical sessions conducted by the eminent expert and resource person, Dr O N Tiwari, Principal Scientist, ICAR-IARI, New Delhi.
Dr Tiwari delivered three engaging lectures and conducted two immersive practical demonstrations, which greatly enriched the learning experience of the participants.
The theoretical sessions covered diverse aspects of algal significance, with a special focus on cyanobacteria. Topics included lipid profiling, nitrogenase activity, pH and electrical conductivity, natural pigments (chlorophyll-a, phycobiliproteins, carotenoids) and cellular compounds (such as ammonia excretions and total sugars).
In the practical sessions, Dr Tiwari demonstrated techniques for media preparation, inoculation and culture preservation, emphasizing essential precautions and best practices for laboratory work on cyanobacteria.
The workshop witnessed active participation from 42 registered participants, including research scholars, postgraduate students of the Department of Botany, and participants from various departments of the University of Jammu and its affiliated colleges.
The event concluded with a valedictory function, graced by Prof Yash Pal Sharma, Dean, Life Sciences, as the chief guest. He delivered the concluding remarks, highlighting the relevance of such training programs.
Prof Susheel Verma, Head, Department of Botany, Convener of the workshop and President, Botanical Club, also addressed the gathering.
The program concluded with the distribution of certificates, followed by a vote of thanks delivered by Dr Abhishek Dutta, Co-convener of the workshop. The occasion was also graced by the presence of Prof Veenu Kaul, Dr Sikander, Dr Harish Chander Dutt and Dr Romica Verma.
