SRINAGAR, Feb 24: A two-day workshop on crime scene management, in light of the new criminal laws, commenced today at the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) in Srinagar.
A spokesperson said that the workshop aims to enhance awareness and skills related to the latest criminal laws and best practices in crime scene management. “The event focuses on leveraging advanced forensic services in crime scene investigations, with participation from officials of all District Mobile Forensic Units and other forensic experts,” he stated.
In his address, Gurmukh Singh, Director of J&K FSL, emphasized the critical role of forensic science in crime scene management. He highlighted ongoing infrastructural and human resource upgrades in District Mobile Forensic Units across J&K, including the procurement of high-tech mobile vans equipped with 15 on-site testing kits for real-time crime scene analysis.
Deputy Director and Officer-In-Charge of J&K FSL Srinagar, Syed Ishfaq Manzoor, underscored the significance of the new criminal laws and their implications. He specifically referenced Section 176(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNSS) 2023, which mandates the presence of forensic experts in all crimes carrying a penalty of more than seven years. He also discussed other legal provisions highlighting forensic science’s role in the criminal justice system.
Workshop coordinator Sheikh Suheel, Scientific Officer, provided an in-depth introduction to the principles and practices of effective crime scene management.
The workshop aims to strengthen forensic capabilities in J&K and ensure that law enforcement personnel are better equipped to handle evolving challenges in crime investigation.
