Workshop on ‘Genomics, Proteomics & System Biology’ begins at SMVDU

KATRA, Mar 10:  A two day Bioinformatics workshop “Genomics, Proteomics and System Biology”, funded by Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Govt of India, began today at Mata Vaishno Devi University, Kakryal.
The focus of this workshop is to introduce young researchers to the scope of Systems Biology, Next Generation Sequencing and Computational Proteomics aspects of Biotechnology.
Prof Sudhir K Jain, Vice Chancellor SMVDU, was the chief guest in the inaugural function. He emphasized on exploration of new fields of Biotechnology Research as a career opportunity to promote research and development in our country. He inspired researchers to take challenges to perform beyond their usual capabilities to excel.
Earlier, Prof V Verma, Dean Faculty of Engineering   and Head, Dept of Biotechnology, informed the participants about the scope of the workshop in this important area of research.
The workshop is being attended by delegates belonging to various institutes of Jammu region, including the Medical College Jammu.
Dr Vikram Singh, Asstt  Prof  at Centre for Computational Biology and Bioinformatics, School of Life Science, Central University of Himachal Pradesh,  delivered a Lecture as a Resource Person on System Biology, followed by a technical hands-on to the participants. Dr Swarkar Sharma Asst Prof Deptt of Biotechnology, SMVDU and Gagandeep Singh from Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology, Palampur, Himachal Pradesh, also delivered lectures and hands-on training to the participants about Next Generation Sequencing and analysis.
Dr  Harpreet Singh, Head PG Department of Bioinformatics, Hans Raj Mahila Maha Vidyala (HMV), Jalandhar, Punjab and  Inderpal Singh, Research Associate at Dept  of Biotechnology, SMVDU, also delivered lectures on this important field of research.
