Woman ends life by hanging, family alleges harassment for dowry

JAMMU, Aug 20: A woman allegedly ended her life by hanging from a ceiling fan at the residence of her in-laws, with her parents claiming she was forced to take the extreme step for the demand of dowry.
Anam Bhatti (30) wife of Sohil Malik of Malik Market, Channi Himmat, was found hanging with a ceiling fan at her in-laws’ residence, a police official said. She was taken to Government Medical College Jammu, where doctors declared her as dead on arrival, he said.
While the body of the deceased woman has been shifted to the mortuary of the hospital for conducting the post-mortem examination, police have registered a case under the relevant sections of the law and started further investigation into the matter.
Meanwhile, the parents of the deceased alleged that she was subjected to continuous harassment and torture by her in-laws for dowry since her marriage about 14 years ago.
A relative told reporters outside the hospital that despite approaching police on several occasions, the abuse continued, eventually forcing her to take the extreme step.
He demanded strict action against the husband and his family.
