Withholding Property Tax

Sir,
The recent decision by the Government of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir to put on hold the imposition of Property Tax, as reported in this newspaper on October 6, 2023 is a welcome decision. This decision comes at a crucial time, with forthcoming elections to the Urban Local Bodies just around the corner. The Government’s move to delay the implementation of Property Tax is a commendable one, taking into consideration the impending changes in local leadership. It ensures that the newly elected representatives have the opportunity to discuss and deliberate on this important matter, which has financial implications for both the Government and the citizens.
Property Tax is indeed necessary for obtaining financial assistance from the Government of India, but it should be implemented with due consideration and dialogue with the public. I hope that the authorities will involve the community in this decision-making process to arrive at a fair and equitable solution. In conclusion, I applaud the Government’s decision to prioritize democracy and public involvement, and I trust that they will proceed with transparency and accountability in this matter.
