Wind storm hits Jammu

JAMMU, Oct 7: High velocity wind storm followed by heavy rains tonight hit many parts of Jammu region and caused devastation in terms of infrastructure both in Government and private sector.
The half an hour long wind storm caused by the Western Disturbance brought the normal life in many parts of Jammu region to standstill with people rushing for the safety to prevent themselves from getting hit by the flying objects like iron sheets.
The windstorm caused massive damage to the infrastructure of the Power Development Department in terms of tilting of the poles and breaking down of electricity wires due to felling of trees and branches.
At many places, particularly in Jammu the vehicular movement got disrupted due to felling of the trees and branches on the roads. The high velocity wind storm also damaged the roof tops of some of the ‘kacha houses’ thereby creating problems for the occupants.
According to the reports, the power supply from the Salal Power Station got snapped due to windstorm as a result of which major parts of Jammu region plunged into darkness and no time-frame can be specified for the restoration of power supply.
En route holy cave shrine of Shri Mata Vaishnodevi, several shops suffered extensive damage as strong winds swept away their roofs mostly made of tin sheets.
As communication link of many areas too got snapped due to breakdown in power supply, the intensity of exact losses could not be ascertained.
However, the vehicular movement on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway came to standstill due to heavy rainfall and hailstorm.
Sources revealed that various areas of Chenani in district Udhampur and Patnitop in district Ramban witnessed landslides due to heavy rainfall and the vehicular movement remained halted for couple of hours on the National Highway. Hundreds of vehicles got stranded in these areas.
