Seeks reservation like KPs; resolving land issues

Srinagar, Mar 20: The All Kashmir District Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (AKDGPC) announced its formation today, outlining its objectives while noting that it will work on critical welfare issues concerning the Sikh Community of Kashmir.

Addressing a press conference, the committee members stated that it comprises dedicated and democratically elected members from all District Gurdwara Committees, pledging to advocate for the rights and interests of Sikhs residing in Kashmir.
Detailing the committee’s objectives, the members strongly advocated for Pahari status to various Sikh-populated areas and villages in Kashmir, recognizing their unique cultural and linguistic heritage.
Paramjit Singh, president of the Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee, Baramulla, said: “We call for the creation of a special job package to address the employment needs of Sikh boys in the region, ensuring equitable opportunities for their socioeconomic development.”
The committee emphasized the implementation of Punjabi language in educational institutions and public domains to preserve the linguistic identity of the Sikh community.
“We demand political reservation on the pattern accorded to the Kashmiri Pandit community, ensuring adequate representation and participation in decision-making processes,” the members added.
They stressed the urgent resolution of land issues pertaining to Gurdwaras, noting that the committee will actively work towards their swift resolution.
Acknowledging that many issues concerning Gurdwaras remain unresolved, particularly Gurdwara Mattan Sahib Anantnag, the committee urged the Government to promptly address these issues.
“We seek government assistance and necessary permissions for the construction of Gurdwara Sahib at Gulmarg and Gurdwara boarding house in Tral to facilitate pilgrims and promote religious tourism,” the members demanded.
The committee also called for declaring Gurdwara Sahib at Amirakadal and Maharajgunj Srinagar as heritage buildings to ensure their preservation for future generations.
On the occasion, the DGPC Coordination Committee pledged to engage constructively with the Government and relevant stakeholders to address the concerns and aspirations of the Kashmir Sikh Community. “We remain committed to fostering harmony, inclusivity, and prosperity for all members of our community.”
