SRINAGAR, Mar 17: The Jammu and Kashmir Department of Wildlife Protection today conducted the inaugural function and training programme for the Hangul population estimation 2025, with nearly 470 participants in attendance.
A department spokesperson said the estimation exercise will commence on March 18 and will be conducted in three phases on March 18, 20, and 22. “The initiative aims to generate accurate population data to aid conservation and management strategies for Hangul,” he said. He added that The programme equipped participants with essential technical skills, reinforcing a collective commitment to Hangul conservation.
He said the event saw participation from students of SKUAST-K, the University of Kashmir, Amar Singh College, Women’s College M.A. Road, and Cluster University, along with representatives from NGOs, the Forest Protection Department, and Wildlife Protection staff.
Pervaiz Ahmad Wani, Deputy Conservator of Forests (DCF) and Wildlife Warden, Central Division, Srinagar, opened the session with an overview of the census and the collective responsibility in conserving the critically endangered Hangul. Rashid Yahya Naqash, Regional Wildlife Warden (HQ), highlighted past estimation efforts and the importance of scientific data collection.
Experts including Dr. Khursheed (SKUAST-K), Dr. Tanushree (WTI), and Aliya Mir (Wildlife SOS) shared insights on research methodologies and conservation challenges. Chief Guest Tawheed Ahmad Deva, IFS, emphasized ecological concerns and data accuracy.
