Though Rs 80,068 crores worth mega package announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been welcomed by various sections of society, it has left West Pakistani refugees, who had pinned high hopes on Modi, dejected as there was no mention of them (in the package).
Out of Rs 80,068 crores worth package, the Prime Minister has kept provision of Rs 5263 crores under the head ‘Security and Welfare of Displaced People’.
The sector wise package revealed that the head ‘Security and Welfare of Displace People’ includes amount towards jobs for Kashmiri migrants, rehabilitation of families from Chhamb and PoK, construction of houses and setting up of five Indian Reserve Police (IRP) battalions. It said the IRP battalions will create 4000 jobs for the youth of Jammu and Kashmir.
While the package mentioned rehabilitation of Kashmiri migrants and Chhamb and PoK refugees, it had no mention of West Pakistani refugees, who were suffering a lot at the hands of successive Central and State Governments.
Though Modi in his speech at Chanderkote announced that all refugees after 1947 have been included in the package, the offical documents made no mention of West Pakistani refugees.
When in opposition, the BJP had repeatedly raised the plight of West Pakistani refugees. However, now when the BJP was in power at both Centre and State, it has excluded them from the package.
