SRINAGAR, Oct 6: Aiming to provide an unparalleled and unique experience for both tourists and locals, the thrilling activity of ‘Water Zorbing’ has recently been introduced along the picturesque banks of Dal Lake, drawing crowds of enthusiastic participants of all ages.
Operated by the ‘Curve Group’ at the scenic Ghat Number-22, the initiative has been spearheaded by the Department of Tourism, with the primary objective of delivering an extraordinary and unforgettable experience to visitors while also offering a fresh and novel adventure to the local community.
‘Water Zorbing’, also known as Aquazorbing or ‘Water Walking’, is an exhilarating activity suitable for individuals of all abilities. It involves the simple act of walking on the surface of the water, encased in a water zorbing ball or inflatable water roller, which rolls as participants walk.
Sheikh Yameen, CEO, and Co-founder of the ‘Curve Group’, shared his excitement about the venture, saying, “It is a fun activity that commenced just 15 days ago after the due tendering process by the concerned department. Currently, we operate two inflatable water roller balls, with plans to add two more.”
The activity, which has been allocated a designated area by the authorities, is adaptable to all weather conditions. Yameen explained that a special material has been employed that expands and contracts by weather changes. He emphasized, “Given that participants do not come into direct contact with the water, it is an all-weather activity.”
Tourists, in particular, have expressed their enthusiasm for the activity, highlighting its novelty compared to the traditional Shikara rides. Tanvi, a tourist, remarked, “While Shikaras and houseboats hold their significance, Water Zorbing adds a new and refreshing dimension to the recreation we enjoy amidst the beauty of Dal Lake.”
Notably, the ‘Water Zorbing’ activity on Dal Lake represents the first of its kind to be offered in an open-water setting here, while, so far, such activities have been seen confined to controlled environments.
Yameen stressed the uniqueness of the initiative, especially for repeat visitors, stating, “Shikaras and Houseboats are our traditional crowd-pullers, but those who frequent this destination should have the opportunity for something different. We aimed to provide an experience that is not only enjoyable but also unforgettable.”
In terms of pricing, a 12-minute Water Zorbing session currently costs Rs 100, per guidelines issued by the concerned department. This duration limit has been put in place to ensure the safety of participants.
Furthermore, the Water Zorbing activity is also proving to be beneficial for the conservation of Dal Lake and its ecosystem. Yameen explained, “It leaves no negative impact on the lake’s ecology and complements its conservation efforts by enhancing aeration and overall conditions.”
Regarding safety measures, the ‘Curve Group’ has exceeded the stipulated requirements, ensuring the presence of trained and certified lifeguards who remain vigilant at all times. Additionally, both sides of the Water Zorbing ball remain closed, and life jackets are readily available for participants, making it a thrilling yet secure experience for all.
