SRINAGAR, Jan 28: Dozens of villages in Aishmuqam area of south Kashmir’s Anantnag district have been without drinking water for the past five days, leaving residents struggling amid bone-chilling cold.
Villages including Aishmuqam, Ainoo, Lakipora, Wajura, Jummo, Tulhaad, Badigam, Ganispora, Gradwan, Badaran, Iram Colony, and Saki Mohalla are facing severe water shortages, locals told Excelsior. “Water is a basic necessity of life, and we have been living without it for the last five days. Imagine the plight of residents who are made to suffer despite it being no fault of theirs,” Peer Azhar, a local resident, said.
He added that they had repeatedly approached the Jal Shakti Department, but their complaints remained unresolved. “We raised the issue with them, but they neither gave us a solid excuse nor resolved it,” Azhar said.
Amid snowfall and freezing Temperatures, residents are forced to melt snow for drinking water. “I do not think water will be available for drinking for the next two days. Right now, we are melting snow and using the same water,” another local said.
When contacted, Superintending Engineer Anantnag, Sareer Ahmad said heavy snowfall had disrupted the water supply. “The disruption was caused by snowfall. We restored the supply line several times over the past few days, but it keeps breaking. We have again restored it today, and by evening, water supply will resume to the area,” he said. He added that they have also dispatched water tankers to meet the immediate demand.
