Srinagar, Jan 6:There is a serious water shortage in many villages in upper Rafiabad in the Baramulla district of north Kashmir as a result of the Jal Shakti department’s failure to underground the supply line, which has frozen due to sub-zero temperatures.
Locals from many villages told Excelsior that the main water supply line has been frozen for a few days because the pipeline supplying drinking water to at least a dozen villages has not yet been undergrounded or connected to a filtration plant.
“Even though the Jal Shakti Department’s ground personnel are working hard to restore water service by clearing the frost from the pipeline, the operation is repeated the next day without success because the morning’s below-freezing temperatures cause the pipeline to get clogged once more,” a local said.
According to locals, the government has been pulling water from a stream that freezes over in the winter despite its grand promises that it is giving the people access to safe drinking water. They lamented that their access to drinking water has been hampered by the department’s ten-year delay in putting the pipeline underground.
Locals urged the LG administration to resolve the matter as soon as possible.
