Vision for UT’s Export Potential

The announcement by the Jammu and Kashmir Government, setting an ambitious export target of Rs 10,000 crore in the next five years, reflects a transformative vision to establish the Union Territory as a competitive export hub. This move, encapsulated in the Draft Jammu and Kashmir Export Policy 2024, can be instrumental in repositioning the region as a contributor to India’s larger goal of becoming a $5 trillion economy. Historically, Jammu and Kashmir has been celebrated for its rich culture and heritage, especially in handicrafts, handlooms, and agri-based products, many of which hold GI tags. However, this wealth of unique products has remained largely underutilised on the global stage. The newly proposed export policy addresses these gaps by putting a framework in place to boost exports in both traditional and emerging sectors, such as pharmaceuticals, IT, biotechnology, and electric mobility.
This ambitious target is achievable only with a focus on building a robust export ecosystem. The Government’s plan to provide essential trade infrastructure, marketing assistance, and an institutional support system is well-aligned to ensure sustained growth. Additionally, specific District Export Action Plans will promote the development of local industries. The focus on skill development, quality enhancement, and certification is also noteworthy, as these aspects are critical in ensuring that products from J&K meet international standards. The policy’s emphasis on branding “Brand Jammu & Kashmir” in domestic and international markets could be a game changer. The Union Territory’s identity as a “heaven on earth” is already recognised globally; positioning it as a “heaven for exports” is a logical extension that can add economic depth to this cultural allure. Nonetheless, realising the policy’s objectives will require the Government’s sustained commitment. Effective implementation of the policy, backed by adequate financial support, market research, and stakeholder engagement will be essential. The Jammu and Kashmir Export Policy 2024 is a timely and visionary blueprint. It is a significant step toward harnessing the Union Territory’s vast potential and truly making it a “heaven for exports.”Sustained focus is most crucial in this case.
