Villager dies of electrocution, police lodges FIR

JAMMU, July 2: A villager died after coming in contact with a live electricity cable, to install an electricity transformer at village Parosti in Akhnoor Sub Division today.
Reports said the PDD authorities had started the process of installing a new transformer after the old transformer supplying electricity to village Parosti was out of order for the past few days. The lineman present on the spot asked a villager from the area, Garu Ram (30), to climb the electric pole and assist him in the process.
But the power supply from the station was restored immediately after he had climbed the pole. Garu Ram received severe electric shocks and burn injuries and fell down on the ground. The lineman and other PDD/JPDCL staff fled the spot, the villagers alleged.
The villagers removed Garu Ram in a critical condition to the sub-district hospital in Akhnoor for treatment, where he died due to serious injuries.
Garu Ram, a father of two children, used to support his family by working as a labourer.  The family members said that the duty of the employees of the PDD was to install a new transformer ut the lineman present on the spot asked Garu Ram to climb the pole.
The villagers demanded that this matter should be investigated and action be taken against the guilty people. The family has demanded a comprehensive investigation into the death and action against the PDD field staff besides compensation.
Meanwhile, SHO Akhnoor, Insp Sanjiv Chib has said that this incident reportedly took place due to the negligence of the concerned PDD staff. An FIR has been registered in this connection and the investigation has been launched.
