JAMMU, Aug 25: A vehicle involved in illegal smuggling of Khair wood was seized at Sujwal Gaink area falling under the jurisdiction of Police Station Gharota today.
On the intervening night of August 24-25, a Scorpio vehicle (JK02AA-9090) was signalled to stop at Sujwal Gaink area, a police official said.
He said the driver of the vehicle instead accelerated the speed and managed to escape under the cover of the darkness, leaving his vehicle abandoned.
Upon inspection, the vehicle was found to be illegally transporting 15 logs of Khair wood, weighing around 8-10 quintals intended for unauthorized commercial gains.
The vehicle, along with the seized Khair wood, was accordingly taken into custody, he said.
The police official claimed after performing legal formalities, a case under the relevant sections of the law was registered at Police Station Gharota, with further investigation taken up.
According to him, the confiscated material and vehicle will be handed over to the Forest Department for further action under the provision of the Forest Act.
