JAMMU, Dec 28: Jammu and Kashmir Police today claimed to have seized a vehicle involved in illegal transportation of Khair wood in the Gharota area.
The action was taken by a team of Police Station Gharota during the intervening night of December 27 and 28 while checking vehicles at a special naka set up at the Ghorda village in Gharota area.
Police said a black-coloured Scorpio (JK02X-0027) was signaled to stop during the checking.
However, the driver attempted to flee on noticing the police presence and managed to escape, they said.
On inspection, the vehicle was found loaded with illegally transported Khair wood logs weighing approximately fifteen to twenty quintals, meant for commercial purposes.
The vehicle along with the seized Khair wood has been taken into police custody.
A report has been entered at Police Station Gharota, and the matter has been formally intimated to the Forest Department for initiating further action under the relevant provisions of the Forest Act.
Police said efforts are underway to identify and apprehend the driver involved in the smuggling attempt.
