Vande Mataram is more than a song, it is the very pulse of our nation: RS Chairman Radhakrishnan

NEW DELHI, Dec 9: Rajya Sabha Chairman CP Radhakrishnan on Tuesday asserted that ‘Vande Mataram’ was not just a national song but was “the very pulse of our nation.”

Making a special mention in the Upper House just ahead of the scheduled debate on the national song, which was set to be initiated by union Home Minister Amit Shah, the Chairman said the song, composed by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, was the source of unwavering courage for revolutionaries.

“More than a song, it is the very pulse of our nation-the unspoken prayer of countless mothers, the quiet hope breathed by the oppressed, and the unwavering courage of those who once dared to dream of freedom,” he said, asserting that, “this timeless composition soon became the collective heartbeat of millions yearning to breathe free.”

“For countless freedom fighters, ‘Vande Mataram’ was not merely a song, it was the final chant from their hearts as they walked fearlessly towards the gallows, their souls illuminated with the dream of an independent Bharat…”

The Chairman also quoted the famous lines of Mahakavi Subramania Bharathi, emphasizing the song’s widespread influence and patriotic sentiment: “A lofty, towering mast, upon whose summit resounds Vande Mataram. Vande Mataram glowed with divine brilliance-their splendor sweeping across the world.”

The Chairman also framed the 150th anniversary celebration as a moment for national rededication to the principles that the song embodies. He called Vande Mataram a “vow” to India’s identity, unity, and collective destiny.

“As we celebrate 150 years of this immortal hymn, I bow with profound humility and gratitude to all the sons and daughters of Mother Bharat who gave their life for the freedom of Bharat,” he said, calling their sacrifice “our eternal guiding light,” he said.

He further asserted,”Let us pledge today: To serve with integrity, To stand together as one people, one nation and to proclaim with pride – Vande Mataram. Vande Mataram. Vande Mataram.”
