SRINAGAR, May 26: A shutdown was observed in Kashmir valley today against the proposal of State Government to establish separate colonies for migrant Pandits and retired Sainiks.
Most of the shops, commercial establishments, educational institutes and petrol pumps remained closed in the summer capital here while public transport largely remained off the roads. However, private vehicles plied normally.
The call for shutdown was given jointly by both the factions of Hurriyat Conference and Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front.
In order to maintain law and order, the police and paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force personnel were deployed in sensitive parts of the city here, an official said. However, no untoward incident occurred during the shutdown.
The police had additionally detained JKLF chairman Yasin Malik yesterday and house arrested other separatist leaders including Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Syed Ali Shah Geelani. The separatists have also called for protests on Friday against the proposals of Pandit and Sainik colonies.
The shutdown was also observed in all other parts of the Valley including south and north Kashmir districts but the situation remained peaceful and there was no major incident of law and order violation.
