Valley in grip of cold

SRINAGAR, Oct 20: The entire Kashmir valley was caught in grip of an intense cold wave as the higher reaches received snowfall while as the people living in the plains were greeted by the rains.
The cold and wintry conditions forced the people to take out the woolens from the cupboards while as some others were forced to use Kangri (firepot) and other appliances of heating. The day temperature plummeted by around 10 degrees leaving people to shiver during the entire course of the day. However, the preceding night was warm with the temperature being about four degrees above the normal level.
Reports of snowfall have come from higher reaches of Pahalgam, Sonamarg, Gulmarg, Ducksum, Yusmarg, Achabal, Kokernag, Tangmarg and other places. All the other important districts and towns received rains during the course of the day. The summer capital also received light rains in the afternoon and this added to the chill.
An official of the Meteorological Department said that Kashmir valley is expected to receive light rain during the next 24 hours. The official said that some areas may be hit by thunder showers on Sunday adding that the cold conditions may persist over the next two days.
The MeT official said that Srinagar recorded a maximum temperature of 12.5 degrees Celsius while as the minimum temperature was recorded as 8.8 degrees Celsius. The maximum temperature was almost 10 degrees Celsius as the same should have been 22 degrees Celsius.
